FG budgets $4million for population control

The federal government has set aside $4 million to tackle family planning, child and maternal health in the 2018 budget, it was learnt yesterday.
 
Chairman of The Association for Advancement of Family Planning, Dr Ejike Orji, stated this at a media round table at the National Population Commission (NPC) headquarters in Abuja.
 
A member of the group, Dr Kole Shettima, lauded the federal government for allocation.
 
He said it was critical to the sustenance of maternal and child health programmes in the country.
 

World contraception day: Nigeria records 46 million abortions annually, says NGO

Ahead of the world contraception day on Tuesday, September 26, a non-governmental organisation, Development Communications (DEVCOMS), has revealed that about 46million abortions are performed in Nigeria every year.
 
In a release, DEVCOMS explained that unplanned pregnancies can have huge impact on the individuals, as well as, their partners’ lives, hence the need to use contraceptive as protection.
 

Take Family Planning Seriously, Curb Poverty – Experts Urge FG

Following fears of projection that Nigeria would become the world’s third most populous nation by 2050, stakeholders have counselled Federal Government to take the issue of family planning seriously, saying it is critical to controlling the rising country’s population.
 
The stakeholders, mainly experts in family planning also reiterated that increase in the uptake of family planning remains a sure-way of reducing poverty and maternal deaths.
 

Ooni, Sultan, CAN lament huge death of Nigerian women at child birth

THE Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) President, Olasupo Ayokunle, have lamented the high rate of Nigerian women who died daily at child birth.
 
Describing this as unacceptable, they advised the Federal Government to invest heavily in Family Planning, to give hope to millions of Nigerian women who died yearly at child birth.
 

‘No family planning budgets in states’

There are no specific budget lines for family planning at the states, the Country Director of Health Policy Plus (HP+) Project Nigeria, Onoriode Ezire, has said.
Quoting a policy brief “Evidence and Advocacy: Unlocking Resources for Family Planning in Nigeria” published by his organization, he said instead, family planning was integrated in the general reproductive health budget.
The project, funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development, (USAID) and implemented by Palladium among others conducted a qualitative assessment of the family planning policy and funding landscape nationally and in Bauchi, Sokoto, and Ebonyi states in 2016.

The Executive Secretary of Oyo State Primary Healthcare Management Board, Dr. Lanre Abass has disclosed that shortage of social amenities was as a result of uncontrolled population explosion in the country.
 
Abass stated this while delivering a paper, titled “Family Planning, Child Spacing, Empowering People, Building Nations” at the 2017 edition of the annual media forum organised by Development Communications (DevComs) Network in collaboration with the state ministry of Health in Ibadan.

Nigeria moves to increase contraceptive uptake among women

The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, has said that Nigeria, in collaboration with partners and the private sector,  has set  a target to increase contraceptive uptake among Nigerian women to 27 per cent by 2020.
 
Adewole said this at the Family Planning Summit in London, United Kingdom, co-hosted by the UK Government, the United Nations Population Fund and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation,  in close partnership with FP2020.
 

‘Declare family planning national emergency’

NO less than 214 million   women worldwide that want to prevent pregnancy have  access to modern contraceptives, the UNFPA has stated.
 
Making the declaration in Abuja during the  commemoration of the 2017 World Population Day (WPD), the body remarked that the day should be reviewed to reflect essence of Family Planning.
 
In the views of Country Director, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Mrs Mairo Mandara,  who spoke at the event,  “Family Planning should be declared a National Emergency.
 

FAMILY PLANNING: Nigeria allocates $4m annually for contraceptives

NIGERIA has restated its commitment towards ensuring access of women to family planning services and commodities with a pledge to achieve a modern contraceptive rate of 27 per cent among all women by 2020.
 
Nigeria also committed to increasing its annual allocation for contraceptives from $3 million to $4 million while ensuring total disbursement of $56 million to the states through  participation in the Global Financing Facility and  international development assistance loans.
