CODE Commends Kano Govt For Approving Child Rights Bill

Connected Development (CODE), a non-profit organisation, has applauded the Kano State Government for approving the Child Rights Protection Bill.
The reason for the bill is to protect children, girls especially, from early marriages and domestic violence, as well as punish violators of children’s rights.

2030: Experts say, adopting family planning will ensure attainment of SDGs in Nigeria

 Family health experts have expressed the view that voluntary adoption of family planning policy, could help Nigeria attain the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) come 2030.
 
The experts stated this on Wednesday at a 3-day Training Workshop on Media Advocacy on Family Planning in Delta.
 
The workshop was organised by the Development Communications (DevComs) Network, a non-Governmental Organisation, in collaboration with The Challenge Initiative (TCI) in Asaba.
 

Ex-minister blames goverment for poor health care system

Nigeria’s former Minister of Health, Professor Adenike Grange has blamed the Nigerian governments at all levels for the poor health care delivery system in the country.
 
Delivering a keynote speech at the 19th Professor Bassey Andah Memorial Lecture at weekend, Professor Grange said short life expectancy caused by high infant and maternal mortality rate is one of the major challenges facing the country’s healthcare delivery system.

Low-income women seek government’s intervention on maternal mortality

Women in Lagos State have called on the government to provide quality medical care, especially for low-income women at the grassroots, to protect their human right to life.
 
They also agitate for improved healthcare system, timely response to emergencies and detailed costing of drugs and other medical charges that do not come free.This charge was made yesterday at a town hall meeting organised by the Women Advocate Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC) with low-income women and government health care providers.
 

Nigeria announces nationwide free surgery for patients with fistula

The federal government of Nigeria is planning to carry out free surgery and laboratory services for all fistula patients in all Federal Teaching Hospitals and Federal Medical Centres in the country. This was announced by Nigeria’s health minister, Prof Isaac Adewole. The minister announced this while speaking at the National Stakeholders Meeting on Obstetric Fistula in Abuja.
 

Oyo Assembly proposes bill on family planning

A Bill for a Law to provide for the Regulation of Family Planning, Reproductive Health and Safe Maternity Services on Tuesday scaled the first reading at the Oyo State House of Assembly.
 
The  Chairman, House Committee on Health, Mr Silas Okunlola, read the bill which was co-sponsored by eight lawmakers.
 
The lawmakers were; Mr Silas Okunlola ( Iwajowa), Mr Segun Ajanaku ( Ibadan South West 2 ), Mr Abiden Wahab (Oluyole) and Mr Bolanle Agbaje (Ibadan North 1).

Gombe Assembly to Mount Pressure on Executive to Release Health Funds in 2018

The Gombe State House of Assembly Committee on Health has vowed to vigorously mount pressure on the state’s executive arm for the timely release of funds in the execution of health programmes in the state come 2018.
 
Chairman of the committee, Dr. Usman Bature Gwani, stated this Tuesday when a Maternal Neo-natal Child Health (MNCH) advocacy team called on the committee to press for its commitment for adequate resource allocation and timely release of allocated funds to capital health projects in the health sector of the state in 2018.
 

Improved health funding will reduce mortality rate – Saraki

Safe Motherhood :NGO seeks more investment in family planning services

Development Communications Network (DEVCOMS), an NGO, has called for increased funding of family planning services to raise the level of contraceptive use to 36 per cent by 2018.
 
The organisation’s media specialist, Iliya Kure, said in a paper he presented to mark 2017 Safe Motherhood Week, that current national contraceptive commodities usage was slightly above 15 per cent.
 
The paper is entitled `Child spacing: Key strategy to reducing maternal death – time to act.’
