Sokoto and Kebbi States ministry of Health has organised a three day workshop aimed at boosting Iron Folic Acid Supplementation (IFAS) for pregnant women in Northern Nigeria.

The IFAS startup workshop would help in no small measure in the sensitising not only child bearing age women in the region but also their husbands on adequate preparation before having children.

Speaking on the importance of Iron Folic Acid Supplementation, Sokoto State commissioner for Health, Dr. Shehu Balarabe Kakale decried that, maternal mortality remained a very serious challenge in northern part of Nigeria.

Dr. Kakale who affirmed that, both anemia and malaria account for over 20 percent of the maternal mortality cases, advised that women should be properly fed with balanced diet, before, during and after child bearing.

While divulging that a good number of the 200, 000 women who get pregnant yearly in Sokoto give birth at home, Dr. Kakale called for a behavioral change towards embracing medical assistance.

“The workshop is a well thought out one. And will go a long way in cutting down death in pregnancy via the use of Iron Folic Acid Suplementation.

“We have to teach our men how to start feeding our women very well during pregnancy because  pregnant women need more care, less work and more balanced diet”.

“We will roll out all arsenal to canvass for proper feeding for pregnant and nursing mothers” Said Dr Kakale.

Earlier, the Acting Country Representative, PLAN International, Daniel Lartey hoped that the 3 years programme brings about very commendable results.
