Addressing maternal mortality in Nigeria

According to the World Health Organisation, Nigeria accounts for over 34 per cent of global maternal deaths. The lifetime risk of dying during pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, or after an abortion for a Nigerian woman is 1 in 22, compared to 1 in 4,900 in developed countries. Preventing maternal mortality and improving the maternal health of Nigerian women therefore needs a multifaceted undertaking.

Recently, Postpartum Support Network Africa (PSN Africa) held the first ever World Maternal Mental Health Day Conference in Africa!

 
World Maternal Mental Health day draws attention to essential health concerns for mothers and families. Life changes around pregnancy make women more vulnerable to mental illness, the most prevalent of which is postpartum depression (depression after childbirth).
