Family planning: Nigeria's health sector may run into deep crisis - Expert

Nigeria’s health sector will, in the next few weeks, run into mas­sive chain of crises, if the fed­eral government fail to rise to the challenge.

 

This is following the with­drawal of support to Unit­ed Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) recently an­nounced by the US President, Donald Trump.

 

The Executive Director, Association for Advance­ment of Family Planning (AAFP), Dr Ejike Orji, dis­closed this in an interview with The AUTHORITY, in Abuja.

 

UNFPA recognises Nigeria, Gambia banning female genital mutilation

The UN Fund for Population Activities, UNFPA, says Nigeria and The Gambia are among the countries that have outlawed the harmful practice of female genital mutilation.
 
The UNFPA, in a report on the of 2017 International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation, commemorated on February 6, stressed the urgent need to abandon the practice.
 

Nigeria Records Highest Malaria Deaths In 2015

The Chief Executive Officer of Private Sector Health Alliance of Nigeria, Dr. Muntaqa Sadiq,‎ has lamented the high rate of Malaria cases in Nigeria, saying over 100 million malaria cases and about 300,000 deaths were recorded in 2015.
 
Speaking at the  launch of ‘Malaria-to-Zero initiative’, a project that seeks to galvanise private sector resources towards averting 1 million malaria cases by 2020, Sadiq said Nigeria has the highest number of malaria casualties worldwide.

The 4th Nigeria Family Planning Conference in Abuja this week hosted the Africa regional launch of The Lancet Maternal Health Series. National and international health leaders were on hand for this important gathering, including the Honourable Minister of Health Isaac Folorunso Adewole and Wellbeing Foundation Africa’s Founder, Her Excellency Toyin Saraki, Global Goodwill Ambassador to the International Confederation Of Midwives, UNFPA Nigeria Family Planning Champion and wife of Nigeria’s Senate President, and Professor Oona Campbell, author of the 2016 Lancet Maternal Health Series.
