Cleric urges couples to embrace family planning for good health

The Nigerian Urban Reproductive Health Initiative (NURHI) Programme Officer, Strategic Behaviour Change, Communication, Advocacy, Demand and Generation in Oyo State, Mr Tunji Samuel on Thursday said NURHI has reduced myths and conceptions about family planning among women in the State.

Mr Samuel stated this in Ibadan in a chat with newsmen on NURHI’s success at the end of the five-day visibility/knowledge parade/rally on family planning embarked upon by NURHI in additional 5 local government areas of the state.

He declared that before the visibility/knowledge parade/rally, most women and men had bad impressions and exhibited misconceptions about family planning, but that the awareness rally has enabled NURHI to educate them on the need to embrace family planning.

“Most people don’t even know the benefits of the family planning we are talking about, they have being educated and enlightened now and they are better educated about what it means. You can see now that many of them are now asking us, they are now coming to us to refer them to the nearest health centre when our people would attend to them,” he said.

The NURHI Programme Officer pointed out that  “over 1500 referral cards have been given to people during the visibility, knowledge parade/rallies held at Akinyele, Lagelu, Egbeda, Onan-Ara and Oluyole local government areas of the state.

According to Mr Samuel, most of the women and men having bad impressions and exhibited misconceptions about family planning through the education and enlightenment by NURHI are now embracing family planning.

The programme Officer stressed that “family planning is not to discourage child bearing but a way to reduce abortion and problems facing families in the process of rearing children, adding “family planning is simply a way of spacing between one child and the other and not a way to discourage couples to have the total number of children they intend to have”.

Speaking on the five-day programme, he said it afforded NURHI to engage no fewer than 200 mobilizer  along with clerics, community leaders, market women and men, media and other stakeholders in the state which resulted in huge successes.
