Group trains journalists on dissemination of family planning information
Media advocacy training in Niger State instituted by the Development Communications Network and The Challenge Initiative (TCI) organised a three-day training for journalists on effective dissemination of information on family planning.
The training, held in Minna on Thursday, had participants drawn mainly from government owned media organisations in Niger State.
The participants also include Information officers, social media influencers and correspondents from the print, radio and television media.
Mr Onche Odeh, the facilitator from DEVCOMS, said the workshop was to train journalists on how to help disseminate information to the general public on the importance of family planning in child birth spacing.
Odeh, who disclosed that six out of 10 women, and seven out of 10 men, did not have the knowledge of child birth spacing, called on journalists to rise to their responsibility of informing and educating the public on the issue.
“Child birth spacing is not only peculiar to people of rural areas.
Actually, most populace of urban areas do not have knowledge of child birth spacing and it is your responsibility as journalists to help in educating people on the benefits of child birth spacing and family planning, ” he said.
Also, Dr Olusola Solanke, Technical Support Lead Service Delivery of TCI, advised couples to embrace family planning and child birth spacing to keep the nation’s population growth from exploding.
Solanke urged the public to shun misconceptions about family planning and child birth spacing, calling on couples to always visit a good healthcare centre for the best methods.
