Mrs Aisha Buhari, Wife of the President, on Tuesday enjoined nursing mothers to embrace long-term exclusive breastfeeding for healthy growth and development of their children.

Buhari gave the advice at the Nestle Nigeria 150 years anniversary celebration held at the company’s Agbara office in Ado Odo/Ota Council Area of Ogun.

The wife of the president, represented by Wife of Ogun Governor, Mrs Olufunso Amosun, added that exclusive breastfeeding would prevent malnutrition.

She further urged mothers to cultivate the habit of breastfeeding their children from age zero to six months without any form of external baby foods.

“As Nestle continues to strive to distribute nutritional products across the globe, I look forward to us collaborating through my Future Assured programmes.

“The programme focuses on promoting health, nutrition and maternal health, especially among our women here in Nigeria,” she said.

She noted that Nestle had joined other leading brands in the country in contributing their quotas to the development of the economy.

“With over 2,000 brands worldwide, through 436 factories operating in 85 countries and booming marketing outlets spread across 189 countries, you have indeed become a leading global brand.

Also speaking, the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Babatunde Ipaye, said every child needed exclusive breastfeeding in order to stay healthy.

“Only 25 per cent of Nigerian mothers do exclusive feeding.

‘’As a result of this, what we need to do is continue to make massive awareness on breastfeeding and behavioural change on breastfeeding to mothers,” he said.
