COVID-19: Family Planning experts alert governments on urgent need to arrest population explosion

Authorities at the federal and state levels have been alerted on the urgent need to scale up efforts to arrest unmanageable population growth that might arise as a result of COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

This could be done through increased annual health budgetary provision backed by family planning allocation releases.

Mrs. Rachael Obodo-Obunseli, the Chairperson Family Planning Advocacy Core Group in Delta State stated this at a media roundtable in Asaba at the weekend, with the theme, "Family Planning Budget Line Release: The Great Imperative in Delta State".

About 80 child productive age women have assessed the family planning facility at Oleh, Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State during the dreaded coronavirus pandemic lockdown, thereby recording sharp increase.

Reproductive Health Supervisor at the Oleh Primary Health Centre, Mrs. Atedezi Aforke who disclosed this to newsmen yesterday said the sharp increase in the number of users was a result of the lockdown, as the facility normally witnessed 60 and below monthly.

The Delta State Government has reiterated its commitment to save the lives of women of reproductive age and their children, stating that it would not leave any stone unturned in its sensitization efforts on the need for Deltans to imbibe childbirth spacing.

The Health4All Media Initiative (HAMI) on Wednesday described the death of one of its members, Dominic Eze Uzu, 60, as “shocking” and “saddened”!
His death, according to a statement by the Secretary of the group, Sola Ojo, came at a time the HAMI was trying to intensify maternal and newborn reportage in Nigeria with a focus on rural communities in Kaduna State.

German minister urges Nigerians to embrace family planning

The Minister of Economic Cooperation and Development, Germany, Gerd Mueller, has advised Nigerian Parents to embrace Family Planning (FP) to promote responsible parenthood.

Mueller on Tuesday during his visit to the Nyanya General Hospital, Abuja, said FP was key in ensuring child spacing as well as promoting their access to quality education and better living condition.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that visit was part of the nationwide family campaign project of the German Federal Minister of Economic Cooperation and Development.
