Govt to reduce maternal mortality

Oyo State Government on Friday said it would continue to give priority to child healthcare toward reducing maternal mortality in the state.

 

Dr Abdul-Azeez Adeduntan, the Commissioner for Health, told newsmen in Ibadan at a news conference to herald the 2016 Maternal, Newborn and Child Health week (MNCHW).

 

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the bi-annual weeklong event will commence from Dec. 12 to Dec. 16 across the 33 local government areas of the state.

NGO organises free medicare for Almajiri schools

Himma Community Health Circle Initiative (H-COHEIC), an NGO, said on Tuesday it had rolled out a special medical care programme for Almajiri schools in Zamfara State.

 

Dr Nuradeen Abubakar, the state Programmme Officer of the NGO, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gusau.

 

Abubakar said that the programme, an initiative of the daughter of Zamfara State governor, Hajiya Zainab Abdulaziz,  was mainly targeted at addressing the health challenges of vulnerable children such as the Almajiri.

NAN MD urges journalists to enlighten public on advantages of family planning

Bayo Onanuga, Managing Director, News Agency of Nigeria has urged journalists to explore other ways of enlightening Nigerians on the advantages of family planning.

He said this was necessary to address the misconceptions the public had about family planning.

Onanuga gave the advice in Abuja on Thursday when he received members of the Local Organising Committee of the 2016 National Family Planning Conference.

Gynaecologist urges leaders to promote child-spacing to reduce maternal mortality

A gynaecologist, Dr. Zubairu Usman, on Tuesday urged Nigerian leaders to have the political will to promote child-spacing to curb maternal mortality.

Usman, who works at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria, Kaduna State made the plea in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Zaria, Kaduna State.

He said that maternal mortality rate in the country was quite alarming compared to other developing countries.
Usman said: “Nigeria’s maternal mortality ratio is about 800 per 100,000 life-births.
