WHO commends Nigeria on swift response to tackle meningitis

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has commended Nigeria for its swift response to tackle the meningitis epidemic in some parts of the country.
The Country Representative of the organisation in Nigeria, Alemu Wondi, made the commendation in Sokoto on Thursday when he paid a courtesy visit on the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III.
”We are here to see how to contribute to shorten the period of the outbreak in the state and other parts of Nigeria.
” Nigeria has also made crucial efforts to eradicate polio, although the country is yet to be certified polio free.

Zamfara meningitis outbreak was avoidable – WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) has blamed the outbreak of meningitis in some parts of Nigeria, particularly Zamfara State on lack of robust surveillance, saying the Zamfara outbreak was avoidable.
This was also as the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) warned against spread of the meningitis outbreak to the North Eastern part of Nigeria, which it said is already suffering from malnutrition.

DFID blames meningitis outbreak on weak health system

Nigerian Representative of the Department for International Department, DFID, Dr. Salma Kolo, has said that the outbreak of Cerebrospinal meningitis, CSM, particularly in the north was an indication that the region’s health system is weak.
Dr. Kolo spoke on Tuesday at the emergency meeting of Northern traditional leaders committee on Public Health Centre, with some North-West State governors.

Pneumonia/meningitis: OYSG to vacinnate 1million children

Governor Abiola Ajimobi has hinted that Oyo State Government is set to protect at least one million children below one year from being killed by pneumonia and meningitis.
 
The governor dropped this hint while speaking at the inauguration of the use of Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV) in the state.
 
Speaking through the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Azeez Adeduntan, at the Ibadan North Local Government headquarters, the government is to achieve this with the introduction of the new vaccine into the state’s immunisation schedule.
