Determined to curb maternal mortality in the country, Development Communications Network (DEVCOM) in partnership with Nigerian Urban Reproductive Health Initiative (NURHI) yesterday sought partnership of New Telegraph to promote family planning services.
DEVCOM Programme Director, Akin Jimoh, who disclosed this in Lagos, said the country was losing many of women to complications arising from pregnancy and child birth, saying if family planning was effectively deployed by people of reproductive age, it would avert many unintended pregnancies as well as prevent unsafe abortions.
Jimoh made the call when a team from DEVCOMS and NURHI, paid a courtesy visit to the headquarters of New Telegraph in Lagos.
He said: “Family planning as you have seen is a vaccine against maternal mortality and if you really plan your family the issue of unwanted pregnancy is thrown out of the line.
“Unwanted pregnancy most of the time leads to unsafe abortion. We can say that unsafe abortion leads to maternal death and other things that surround it.”
While urging the management of New Telegraph to prioritise health while expanding reportage to include science, Jimoh said both DEVCOM and NURHI would be training journalists, including those from New Telegraph, to build their capacity on family planning and maternal health issues as a means of improving their reportage.
