Lack of knowledge behind malnutrition, not poverty, says group
Head of the Women Friendly Initiative Dr Francis Eremutha says poverty is not the major cause of malnutrition in Nigeria, but a lack of knowledge of “how to eat well with what is available.”
He said this at a media forum on the implementation of the National Strategic Plan of Action for Nutrition (NSPAN) in the FCT, noting that Nigeria is among six countries that account for half of all child deaths from malnutrition worldwide.
“We are told that malnutrition is accounting for half of the deaths of children aged under five, with a wrong conception that poverty is its major cause while forgetting that when you eat wrongly, you will still be malnourished,” he said.
“It’s shameful that we have many farmers in Nigeria, yet our children are malnourished. They need to be encouraged and taught how and what to farm so that they can eat well with what is available.”
