Nigeria Has 7.5m Births Annually – Dr Danjuma

Despite the worrisome high degree of maternal mortality in Nigeria, Dr. Danjuma Nehemiah has affirmed that the nation still give birth to a nation annually.
 
Dr. Danjuma, who is a Health Specialist, Sokoto UNICEF Field Office added that, no fewer than 7.5 million births is been recorded annually in Nigeria.
 
Speaking on Wednesday at a workshop on Media Engagement On Dissemination of “Facts For Life” messages held in Dankeni Hotels, Sokoto, Dr Danjuma also added that 70 percent of childbirth in the country is not registered and 62 percent are not in school.
 
While giving frightening statistics about the nation’s health status as indicated by the National Demographic Health Survey (NDHS 2013), Dr Danjuma said the nation records about 576 maternal, deaths per 100, 000 live births.
 
According to Dr Danjuma, 150 women die daily in Nigeria as 41 percent of women go through pregnancy without antenatal care. 62 percent of childbirth are not attended to by health professionals thereby leading to around 44, 000 death annually.
 
He added that, under 5 years mortality is about 128 deaths to 1000 live births, as 2, 700 deaths within under 5 is been recorded daily.
 
“88 percent of children in Nigeria are not fully immunized and 70 percent not vaccinated against measles.
 
“1 in every under 5 child is stunted or stuffers from some form of malnutrition. 30 percent of children malnourished. 62 percent not in school.
 
“30 percent of children in Nigeria are malnourished, 19 percent of under 5 have malaria.
 
“49 percent of women not protected against tetanus at all. 43 pecent don’t get iron tablets”.
