NLC to monitor funds for –save-a-million-lives programme in states
Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has pledged to monitor grant recently disbursed to states in the country for the Save-one-million-lives programme.
The grant was released earlier this year to enable the states develop their primary health centres. They will continue to obtain the grant on yearly basis, and disbursement would be based on what they were able to do with what they obtained in the previous year. The Federal Government got the fund from the World Bank.
Speaking at the operationalization meeting of the programme organized for Commissioners of Health in Benue, FCT, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger and Plateau States in Abuja recently, the labour union, through its president, Ayuba Wabba, said monitoring the use of the grant was necessary to make benefitting states attach importance to its judicious use, and ensure it is used for the purpose for which it is intended.
A release made available to National Mirror by Director Media and Public Relations in the Federal Ministry of Health, Mrs Boade Akinola, said the NLC would set up a Committee for Monitoring and Evaluation of the programme.
Wabba, who was represented by Mrs.Maureen Onyia, said using the fund “would not be business as usual, because the NLC would keep the state governments on their toes towards utilization of the grant.”
He pledged the support of the NLC for the programme, as according to him, it is people-oriented.
The Minister of Health,Prof.Isaac Adewole, said at the programme that the essence of the meeting was to foster cooperation between the states and Federal Government so that they would be on the same page with the view to chart the way forward for health care delivery in the country.
