Protecting Fundamental Rights & Freedom of Expression: Lessons Learned from COVID-19

Greetings.
The public sphere is inundated with lessons from the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, and the 1st Virtual and 7th Annual Conference of the Association of Communication Scholars & Professionals of Nigeria (ACSPN) and Annual General Meeting, holding from September 2-3, 2020, is, among others, providing opportunities to interrogate the issue of “Protecting Fundamental Rights & Freedom of Expression: Lessons Learned from COVID-19”, with a panel to be chaired by Professor of Mass Communication and Social Change, University of Jos who is currently on sabbatical at Pan-Atlantic University, Lagos, and Treasurer of ACSPN, Prof Victor Ayedun-Aluma.
 
The panellists are Prof. Jonathan Rozen, Senior Researcher, Africa Program, Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), Mr. Bunmi Makinwa, former UNFPA Africa Regional Director, Mr. Akin Jimoh, Executive Director, Development Communications Network, and Prof Daniel Wale Awodiya, Delaware State University, USA.

The theme of the conference is, "Communicating Identities and Nationhood: Promoting Inclusive Democracy through Access to Information and Knowledge Societies ", and collaborating organisations at the conference which will witness the bi-annual election of the Association, include, UNESCO, Information for All Programme (IFAP), and World Commission on the Ethics of Scientific Knowledge and Technology (COMEST), and Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON)
 
The panel would explore a better understanding of and solutions to why freedom of expression remains a constitutional guarantee in Nigeria and other climes, but continuously appear to be a moving target.
