The United Nations has called for the involvement of men in tackling the alarming rate of maternal and child mortality in Nigeria.

Maternal, Newborn and Child health (MNCH) Manager, UNICEF Nigeria, Dr. Linda Akondeng, stated this at a media conference organised by “The White Ribbon Alliance Nigeria” (WRAN), for the formal presentation of Jim Iyke as WRAN special Envoy/Goodwill Ambassador for MNCH  in Abuja.

Dr. Akondeng who said over the years women have been the only ones engaged in the fight against Maternal and Child Mortality, said it was high time the men are brought on board.

According to her, the male support have proven to be the only missing link to addressing family health, especially in the North West.

She therefore advised the the new Ambassador to see his new task as a very challenging one that needs total commitment adding that 62% of births take place at home, where women’s lives are at a greater risk.

“Fear of disrespect and abuse plays a significant role in a woman’s decision to give birth at home” she added.
