UK-based Don Rates Niger High In Maternal, Neonatal Care

A professor of medical engineering technology at Imperial College London, United Kingdom (UK), Prof Hippolite Amadi has rated Niger State high in maternal and neonatal care.
He expressed delight at the state’s special care for the baby unit at the Jummai Babangida Maternal and Neonatal Hospital Minna, saying that it is one of the best in Nigeria.
Amadi stated this shortly after an assessment tour of the unit with journalists to see the equipment installed and the services being rendered by the unit.

More women accepting family planning to prevent maternal deaths – Niger govt

No fewer than three hundred and sixty-six thousand, four hundred and thirty-nine( 366, 439) persons used various family planning-FP methods in Niger State in 2021.
The State Family Planning Coordinator, Nurse Dorcas Talatu stated this in an interview in Minna.
She recalled that the first outbreak of COVID-19 in the country in February 2020, affected various spheres including the health sector negatively, explaining that the lockdown, occasioned by the pandemic in 2020, prevented clients from accessing FP commodities.

Nigeria is second only to China for maternal mortality, leading gynaecologist Prof Friday Okonofua recently claimed. 
According to the Nation, a daily newspaper, Okonofua was speaking at a news conference in Benin, southern Nigeria in December 2021. He heads the World Bank-backed Centre of Excellence in Reproductive Health Innovation at the University of Benin.

Delta records decrease in perinatal, maternal deaths

Delta State has recorded a decrease in maternal and perinatal deaths across the state, according to the latest surveillance and response report launched by the state’s ministry of health.
The report indicated a reduction in maternal deaths from 264 per 100,000 live births in 2018 to 184 deaths in 2020.

Kano Targets 3.6m Children for Immunisation

Kano State Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has stated that over 3.6 million children would be immunised against polio virus in the Maternal Newborn and Child Health Week (MNCHW) January campaign.
According to him, the MNCHW would be conducted alongside the Outbreak Response exercise (OBR1), adding that immunisation personnel would go house to house to vaccinate children below five years against poliovirus.

OYO state government is training 270 individuals in community nursing and community midwifery with the intent to employ them afterwards to beef up health service provision in the community.

Provost, Oyo State College of Nursing and Midwifery, Mrs Gbonjubola Owolabi, made the disclosure at the flag-off of the community nursing and community midwifery programmes and commissioning of a block of three classrooms in Ibadan.

Communities in Zing, Taraba State, have embraced family planning with enthusiasm as a way to check family sizes in tune with current economic realities.
Mrs Roseline John Jella of the General Hospital Zing, who is the local government coordinator of family planning, said that there was a lot of awareness as a result of their outreach program and activities of some NGOs, that has triggered overwhelming interest from the locals.
