COVID-19: Nutrition Society Encourages Mothers In Isolation To Express Breastmilk

The Nutrition Society of Nigeria (NSN) says mothers in isolation should be encouraged to express breastmilk for their babies to be fed.
According to the organisation, this is to ensure that the baby is well nourished even while the mother receives care while receiving treatment and recovering from COVID-19 .
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that expressing milk means to squeeze milk from breast, put in a container or bottle for feeding without putting the baby directly to breast.

Covid-19: FG, stakeholder should promote nutrition among Nigerians – Brai

President, Nutrition Society of Nigeria, Dr Bartholomew Brai has called on government and other stakeholders to intensify efforts towards providing food and nutrition support to indigent households and scale up existing social protection programmes in the country. Brai also advocates adequate nutrition in the management of covid-19 patients with attention on energy, protein and fluid balance maintenance.

FG budgets $4million for population control

The federal government has set aside $4 million to tackle family planning, child and maternal health in the 2018 budget, it was learnt yesterday.

Chairman of The Association for Advancement of Family Planning, Dr Ejike Orji, stated this at a media round table at the National Population Commission (NPC) headquarters in Abuja.

A member of the group, Dr Kole Shettima, lauded the federal government for allocation.

He said it was critical to the sustenance of maternal and child health programmes in the country.

Babatunde Osotimehin was a global leader of public health, women’s empowerment and young people, particularly focused on promoting human rights, including sexual and reproductive health and rights, as well as population and development.

After his appointment as UNFPA Executive Director, effective 2011, he spearheaded efforts by the international community to advance the milestone consensus of the International Conference on Population and Development, held in Cairo in 1994.

“Unwanted pregnancies, illegal abortions on the rise in Nigeria”

With low contraceptive prevalence rate of about fifteen percent, Nigeria continues to record high unintended pregnancies, many of which are resolved through clandestine abortion, despite the country’s restrictive abortion law. Many of these often result in death or disability, a statement by Development Communications (DEVCOM) Network said on Monday.

This alarm comes as Nigeria celebrates Safe Motherhood Day, today August 23 – August 24.
