A Non-Governmental- Organisation (NGO), Association for Reproductive and Family Health (AFRH), yesterday said it has recruited 2, 208 community-based distribution agents across the four focal states of Kebbi, Zamfara, Jigawa and Katsina to sensitise husbands and mothers on the benefits of child spacing.
Traditional and religious leaders in the North West zone have demanded increased funding of child spacing services and survival products at all levels of government in Nigeria.
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) on Wednesday commended the Kaduna State Government’s response to prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV/AIDS.
The UNICEF chief on HIV/AIDS, Dorothy Mbori-Ngacha, gave the commendation at a meeting in Kaduna.
Mbori-Ngacha said that the state government would soon achieve the Prevention of Mother-to- Child Transmission (PMTCT) of HIV/AIDS.
She said that the state was able to test and counsel large number of women on HIV/AIDS in 2016.
Kaduna State Government has expressed satisfaction over the progress been recorded in child spacing across the state as it announced plans to test run a new injection in four local government areas of the state.
According to the state government, the administering is a pilot project which if successful will be expanded to other local government areas of the state.
A gynaecologist and wife of Niger State governor, Dr. Amina Abubakar Sani Bello, has called for child spacing to check the increasing rate of maternal mortality in the state.
In an address at the opening ceremony of the World Contraception Day (WCD) Ambassadors project at Gyigyi and Sharuwadna communities in Shiroro Local Government Area, Dr. Amina said the maternal mortality rate in the state was high and that all hands must be on deck to check it.
MRS Toyin Saraki, the wife of Senate President, on Thursday appealed to families to space pregnancies for 1000 days for better life, prosperity and good health of the family.
Toyin Saraki made the appeal at the 2016 Women Pre-Conference meeting of the 4th National Planning Conference scheduled for Nov. 7 and Nov. 9 in Abuja.
The pre-conference had the theme `Women and Family Planning in Nigeria: A critical Requirement for Harnessing Demographic Dividend for Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals”.
A gynaecologist, Dr. Zubairu Usman, on Tuesday urged Nigerian leaders to have the political will to promote child-spacing to curb maternal mortality.
Usman, who works at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria, Kaduna State made the plea in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Zaria, Kaduna State.
He said that maternal mortality rate in the country was quite alarming compared to other developing countries.
Usman said: “Nigeria’s maternal mortality ratio is about 800 per 100,000 life-births.
