International Youth Day: NGO Urge FG To Declare State Of Emergency On Education

A non Governmental Organization, Development Communication, (DevCom) Network has urged the Federal government of Nigeria to declare State of emergency on education.
To celebrate this year’s International Youth Day, themed “Transforming Education” it is pertinent to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all” as enshrined in Goal 4 of the Sustainable Development Goals, Akin Jimoh, DevComs Program Director said.

“Nigeria is in big problem” – UK-based Nigerian doctor warns

A UK-based Nigerian doctor, Dr Harvey Olufunmilayo, has decried the huge number of Nigerian doctors seeking greener pastures abroad.
Olufunmilayo, who practises in Leeds, said about 1,000 Nigerian doctors passed the Plab1 exam in March 2018 to enable them practice in the UK.
The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) had in January 2018 said that there were 4,000 patients to one doctor in Nigeria, describing the trend as unacceptable.

The birthday of twins Karen and Kelly Junior will always be tinged by sadness as it also marks the day their mother died in childbirth — a tragic occurrence of increasing public debate in Zambia.
 
Their mother, Karen Kalengele, 33, was admitted to the Medcross hospital in Lusaka, one of the country’s most prestigious private medical facilities, on March 18 to give birth.
 
Her labour was slow and, as she was expecting twins, doctors chose to perform a Caesarean section.
 

Canada pledges $1.9m to child health programme in Nigeria, Ghana

Nigeria currently has a high incidence of maternal mortality. According to the United Nations ‎Population Fund, Nigeria is responsible for 10 percent of the global maternal mortality burden. That is, about 111 women die during child birth in the country.
The IDRC is funding the programme through the West Africa Health Organisation (WAHO), which is making a contribution of $1.5m.
