UN bids Osotimehin farewell, calls for renewed advocacy on HIV/AIDS

The UN Resident Coordinator, Mr Edward Kalllon, has called for a renewed commitment to champion advocacy for persons living with HIV/AIDS in the country.
 
Kalllon made the call at the Memorial Service organised  by the UN system in Nigeria on Friday in Abuja to honor late Prof. Babatunde Osotimehin.
 
Osotimehin, who until his death was the Executive Director of UN Population Fund (UNFPA), died on June 4 in Harrison, New York, at the age of 68.

Babatunde Osotimehin was a global leader of public health, women’s empowerment and young people, particularly focused on promoting human rights, including sexual and reproductive health and rights, as well as population and development.
 
After his appointment as UNFPA Executive Director, effective 2011, he spearheaded efforts by the international community to advance the milestone consensus of the International Conference on Population and Development, held in Cairo in 1994.

Osotimehin, former minister of health, is dead

Babatunde Osotimehin, Nigeria’s minister of health from December 2008 to March 2010, is dead.
 
Up until his death, the 68-year-old was the executive director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
 
According to sources at the UNFPA, his death was announced at the Nigerian office of the UN body on Monday morning.
 
He was said to have died in New York.

No woman should die of childbirth - UNFPA

Prof. Babatunde Osotimehin, UN Under-Secretary-General and the Executive Director of UN Population Fund (UNFPA) has said that it is no longer acceptable for a woman to die during childbirth.
 
Osotimehin told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sidelines of an award dinner organized by the Nigeria Health Foundation in Newark, U.S.
 
The UNFPA chief said people should insist that both local and state governments must deliver healthcare to them.

THE CAMPAIGN AGAINST CHILD MARRIAGE

A girl who goes to school and stays in school till about 18, according to Prof. Babatunde Osotimehin, executive director, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), “is a better mother than a girl who has a child at 10.”
 
Osotimehin, a former Health Minister in Nigeria, spoke last week when he took his public enlightenment campaign against child marriage to Kano “so that the age for marriage is shifted at least to 18.”
