The World Health Organisation (WHO) has commended Nigeria for its swift response to tackle the meningitis epidemic in some parts of the country.
The Country Representative of the organisation in Nigeria, Alemu Wondi, made the commendation in Sokoto on Thursday when he paid a courtesy visit on the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III.
”We are here to see how to contribute to shorten the period of the outbreak in the state and other parts of Nigeria.
” Nigeria has also made crucial efforts to eradicate polio, although the country is yet to be certified polio free.

More than 98,000 children in Birniwa and Kirikasamma Local Government Councils of Jigawa, were immunised against polio disease.
 
The Primary Healthcare Managers (PHM) of the two local governments, Malam Adamu Mohammed and Alhaji Ibrahim Bura, disclosed this in Jigawa.
 
They said the children were administered Oral Polio Vaccines (OPV) and antigens against other child killer diseases in the concluded March round of immunisation exercise.

Although healthcare innovations exist within the country, poor capacity/support systems for innovators have been one of the constraints to achieving scale.
A number of innovations have not made valuable or sustainable impact in the health sector due to the lack of enabling systems or programmes. Every year, Nigerians spend an estimated $1 billion  on medical treatment abroad.
