Exclusive breastfeeding averts childhood deaths — UNICEF

Mrs Ada Ezeogu, a Nutrition Specialist with United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), said on Wednesday that 13 percent of death among children could be averted if mothers embark on exclusive breastfeeding.
 
Ezeogu made the assertion in Igbara Oke, Ondo state during a five-day workshop organised by Ondo State Ministry of Information in collaboration with UNICEF on “Production of Radio Scripts on Facts For Life’.
 

2017 health budget promises more child deaths

Group to Conduct House-to-House Education on Maternal, Child Health in Oworonsoki

A youth group in Lagos, Carrington Youth Fellowship Initiative’s Health Team has decided to tackle the spate of maternal and child mortality in Nigeria by engaging and educating the members of Oworonsoki community on better maternal and child health. The group plans to organise a three-day house-to-house education visit to the members of the community especially the slum areas of the town, to talk to pregnant women and people who take care of women under the age of five years, they also plan to share educational resources and use SMS to reinforce the message.

2017 Budget: Senate Committee Urges FG To Allocate N96bn For Malnutrition

Senate Committee on Health, on Monday, mandated the Federal Ministry of Health to propose N96 billion in 2017 budget for tackling acute malnutrition in the country.

 

It further stated that government might be compelled to declared a state of emergency on malnutrition in the country if adequate funding is not made available for the condition.

 

Chairman of the committee, Senator Olanrewaju Tejuoso  gave the directive at the committee’s “High Level Policy Dialogue on Nutrition” in Abuja.

Saraki’s Wife Seeks More Training For Health Workers

The wife of Nigeria’s Senate President, Mrs Toyin Saraki, says the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations cannot be secured if there is no investment in the capacity of health workers.

 

 

Speaking at a National Health Workers’ Training in Abuja on Monday, Mrs Saraki, who is also the president of the Wellbeing Foundation, highlighted that health workers should be given priority because of the role they play in preventing maternal and child mortality.

With low contraceptive prevalence rate of about fifteen percent, Nigeria continues to record high unintended pregnancies, many of which are resolved through clandestine abortion, despite the country’s restrictive abortion law. Many of these often result in death or disability, a statement by Development Communications (DEVCOM) Network said on Monday.
