Professor Oluwarotimi Ireti Akinola, is a Professor of Obstetrics & Gynaecology and current National President, Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of Nigeria, SOGON.
 
During the Annual General Meeting of the Society in Sokoto,  Akinola spoke to Good Health Weekly about fortunes of SOGON while  stressing the need for repositioning of policies that would bring about better maternal and child health in Nigeria. Excerpts:
 

Federal government raises alarm over Nigeria’s population growth

Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, over the weekend raised a fresh alarm over Nigeria’s rate of population growth.
 
According to him, if the rate was unchecked, the explosion in the nation’s population would impact negatively on the country’s economy and welfare.
 
To this end, Adewole called for the use of Community Health Extension Workers (CHEWS) to address the problems of shortage and misdistribution of manpower needed for the provision of access to family planning services in rural communities and other hard to reach areas.

NYSC Offers Free Healthcare Services In Katsina

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has offered free medical services to over 1,000 rural dwellers in Doro village, Bindawa Local Government Area of Katsina State under its Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD).
 
Mr John Okpo, the state NYSC Coordinator, disclosed this while monitoring the programme on Monday in the area.
