Maternal/infant mortality: Race to 2020 target looking bleak

The Federal Government’s target of reducing the high maternal and infant mortality rate by achieving a 27 percent modern contraceptive prevalence rate (mCPR) by 2020 remains a daunting task as the year winds down.
Meanwhile, the country’s maternal mortality remains one of the highest in the world with 576 deaths per 100,000 live births according to Nigeria Demographic Health Survey (NDHS, 2013).

1,140 Niger homes to be assessed in demographic survey

No fewer than 1,140 households in Niger State will be assessed in the 2018 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) which has just started across the country.
The survey will be carried out to produce comprehensive data on the nation’s population, health and nutrition situation.
The Overseeing Federal Commissioner of the National Population Commission (NPC) for the state, Alhaji Yusufu Mohammed Anka said that 1,140 households in 38 clusters in 20 local government areas would be surveyed in the state.

'Child spacing curbs maternal, child mortalities'

Stakeholders have called for the embrace of child spacing, stressing that it curbs maternal and child mortalities as well as constitutes an essential part of wellbeing of families.

"In Nigeria, all Demographic Health Surveys, DHS, have shown this pattern. The 2013 DHS data showed that when births are spaced at least three years apart, the number of infants deaths fall dramatically, " Country Director, Health Policy Plus(HP+) Nigeria,Onoriode Ezire noted

The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) recently launched a five-year strategic plan to improve this country’s health sector. The plan, launched on Tuesday April 18, 2007 brought together civil society organizations and other medical associations to parley and advance the sector. Among those at the meeting to finalize the NMA Strategic Plan 2017-2022 were development partners.
