HIV/AIDS: FG developes plan to eliminate Mother-to-Child transmission

The Federal Ministry of Health has developed a National Operational plan for the Elimination of Mother-to-Child transmission of HIV (2017-2018), aimed at halting the spread of the scourge by 2030.

 

Dr Deborah Odoh, the Assistant Director, HIV/AIDS Division of the ministry made this known at the National Conference on HIV Prevention in Abuja on Wednesday.

 

She said the operational plan had incorporated the roles of the private sector and the community in the bid to end the Prevention of Mother-to Child Transmission (PMTCT) of HIV.

 

Group tells President appoint Special Adviser on HIV/AIDS

A group, Society for Women and Children Living with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria (SOWCHAN), has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to appoint a Special Adviser on HIV/AIDS.

 

The group also condemned the government’s poor attitude towards the funding of the HIV/AIDS in Nigeria.

 

SOWCHAN made its demands on Tuesday, November 29, after invading the Abuja venue of the National Conference on HIV Prevention in Nigeria.

 

Osinbajo starts campaign to end child marriage

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has launched a nationwide campaign to end to end child marriage, making Nigeria the 16th country to join an African Union campaign to end the practice by 2030.

 

Nearly one out of every two girls in Nigeria is married off under age of 18, making Nigeria the country with the world’s highest number of child brides.

 

Nigeria committed to ending all forms of harmful practices, including child marriage, against women and girls at an African Union summit in 2014, in line with Sustainable Development Goals.

 

Worried about prevalence of child marriage in Northern Nigeria, Government moves to stop practice

The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Aisha Alhassan, says about 65 per cent of children below 18 years were forced into marriage in the Northern region.
 
Ms. Alhassan made this known in Abuja at the launch of national campaign on ending child marriage in Nigeria.
 
She said that the detrimental consequences of child marriage on children, women, families, communities and nations at large were evident.

UN fixes 2030 to end AIDS scourge

Ahead of the 2016 World AIDS Day, outgoing UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has said that the organisation is working toward ending the AIDS scourge by 2030.

 

“The United Nations is working worldwide to end AIDS by 2030,” Ban said on Monday in New York in his message for World AIDS Day, observed on Dec. 1.

 

Ban said 35 years since the emergence of AIDS, the international community could look back with some pride.

Only 13.9% of women access family planning in Nasarawa

Programme Manager HERFON, Dr. Hassana Adamu has said only 13.9 percent of women of reproductive age in Nasarawa state, have access to contraceptives which is far below the national target of 26 percent.

 

Adamu who said there is need to scale up the budget for family planning, attributed the low adoption rate in Nasarawa State to lack of policy guidelines and poor budget allocation in the State.
