Nigeria, others to increase immunisation coverage

African Heads of State have pledged to increase investment in immunisation coverage on the continent.
 
The leaders made the commitment at the 28th African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, are to increase their country’s political and financial investments in vaccination programmes .
 
The World Health Organisation Regional Director for Africa, Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, noted that while immunisation coverage has improved over the last 15 years , the progress has stagnated in many countries.
 

Govt recruits 1,245 healthcare workers to reduce mortality rate

The Kaduna State Government on Tuesday said it would recruit 1, 245 healthcare workers to address the challenges of maternal health.
 
The State Commissioner for Health, Dr Paul Dogo, disclosed this at a one-day stakeholders’ forum in Kaduna.
 
The forum is being organised quarterly by a coalition of Civil Society Organisations known as Kaduna State MNCH Accountability Mechanism (KADMAN) in collaboration with the Community Health and Research Initiative (CHR).
 

Save the Children pledges to help educate child victims displaced by Boko Haram

A non-governmental organisation, Save the Children, has disclosed its plans to partner with the federal government in a bid to make education a priority in Nigeria.
 
Tove Wang, CEO of Save the Children Norway, made this known during a media briefing on the preparations for the Oslo Humanitarian Conference on the crisis in Nigeria.
 
The conference which is scheduled for February 23 and 24 in Norway, will focus on nutrition, protection, food security and also on the access to education.
 

Trump to cut off funding to UN agencies

A draft executive order from the Trump administration orders government to stop funding any United Nations(UN) agency that promotes “the performance of abortion or sterilisation as a method of family planning.”
 
It’s one of a number of prohibitions in the order that sets up a process for reviewing all American contributions to the UN—and automatically eliminating many others.
 

Tambuwal Inaugurates Forum On Child Rights Protection In Sokoto

Family planning: private hospitals outdo public

Latest survey assessment the availability of family planning commodities across Nigeria has found that for every one public health facility able to provide family planning service, three private outlets do the same.
 
The survey suggests government distribution of family planning commodities and services could be better done through private outlets.
 
The FPWatch survey of more than 2500 outlets found private sector accounted for 86% of outlets stocking contraceptives or providing services in Nigeria.
 

2017 health budget promises more child deaths

Abu’s wife, Ocheme had long wished for a baby girl, she has had three boys already in three years; the fourth attempt was a still birth and just one year after, she got pregnant again with same high hopes of having a baby girl.
 
Unfortunately, she never made it. She had prolonged labour and was taken for cesarean section- only the baby came safe.
