Poverty accounts for high level child malnutrition - Expert

Nigeria continues to record high rate of malnutrition as a result of poverty across the country, the Nutrition Specialist, United Nations International Children's Fund (UNICEF) Philomena Irene has said.
 
Irene who made this known yesterday at a two-day UNICEF sponsored workshop with the theme, Investing in Child Malnutrition for the Future #StopchildmalnutritionNigeria in Yola, Adamawa State also said, most malnourished children come from poor home.

China Offers Anti Malaria To Five Million In Africa

China has recently declared as part of its new health commitments to provide Africa with the popular anti-malaria medication, Artemisinin, for five million people. This was revealed in an interactive session with Chinese health officials in Beijing as they hosted African journalists from the 2017 China Africa Press Centre programme.
 

Aisha Buhari lays foundation of 50-bed Maternity Centre in Daura

The Wife of the President, Aisha Buhari, on Thursday laid the foundation of a 50-bed Maternity and Child Care Centre in Daura, Katsina State, to promote child and maternal health in the area.
 
Mrs Buhari said the project was fully funded by the Aisha Buhari Foundation under the Future Assured programme.
 
She said the aim of the project was to reduce maternal and child mortality, adding, “ we would ensure that we establish a well-equipped, functional maternity centre in each of the six geo-political zones in the country.”

Abuja — Disturbed by the incessant maternal and child mortality rate in the country, Nollywood Actor Jim Iyke has concluded plans to lead an awareness campaign to the grassroots level in the country. This is against the backdrop that 145 people die everyday on maternal mortality.
Speaking in Abuja during his installation as the White Ribbon Alliance Nigeria (WRAN) Special Envoy for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health, the actor assured the campaign would commence in two weeks time.

Lack of knowledge behind malnutrition, not poverty, says group

Head of the Women Friendly Initiative Dr Francis Eremutha says poverty is not the major cause of malnutrition in Nigeria, but a lack of knowledge of “how to eat well with what is available.”
He said this at a media forum on the implementation of the National Strategic Plan of Action for Nutrition (NSPAN) in the FCT, noting that Nigeria is among six countries that account for half of all child deaths from malnutrition worldwide.

Nigeria requires $85.5m to treat malnourished children – UNICEF

The United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) on Wednesday said Nigeria requires $85.5 million to address malnutrition of about two million children in dire need of treatment.
UNICEF Nutrition Specialist, Bauchi Zone, Mrs. Philomena Irene, disclosed this at a media dialogue held on Wednesday in Yola, Adamawa, with the theme: “Investing in Child’s Malnutrition for the Future.”
Irene noted that the treatment of a malnourished child with Ready-To-Use-Therapeutic-Food (RUTF) would span through eight to 12 weeks, depending on the severity of the condition.

UNICEF Engages Journalists On Child, Maternal Health

The UNICEF has charged journalists in Kebbi State to propagate child survival, development, protection and child rights effectively.
 
This is part of a communiqué issued at the end of a four-day workshop on child and maternal health care organised by the fund in Birnin Kebbi.
 
A copy of the communiqué signed by Messrs Adebayo Ismail, Tamany Yusuf and Adamu Kanya, was made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

The United Nations has called for the involvement of men in tackling the alarming rate of maternal and child mortality in Nigeria.
 
Maternal, Newborn and Child health (MNCH) Manager, UNICEF Nigeria, Dr. Linda Akondeng, stated this at a media conference organised by “The White Ribbon Alliance Nigeria” (WRAN), for the formal presentation of Jim Iyke as WRAN special Envoy/Goodwill Ambassador for MNCH  in Abuja.
 

Nigeria: Two in Three Children Not Eating Right Food - NDHS

Two out of every three Nigerian child are not eating the right food suitable for their health, the latest National Demographic Health Survey reveals.
Revealing this at the start of a three-day capacity building workshop for health editors and reporters on challenges in the health and nutrition sector in Nigeria, organised by the Civil Society Sacling Up Nutrition un Nigeria (CS-SUNN) and PACFaH in Kaduna, the programme director CS-SUNN, Beatrice Eluaka said, malnutrition has become endemic in Nigeria and no part of the country is immune to the problem of malnutrition.
