Health Bauchi launches child spacing roadmap

Bauchi State government in conjunction with an international Non-Governmental Organisation, Health Policy Plus (HP+) have launched a costed plan to implement child spacing in the state.  
 
The plan hopes to give direction to Bauchi’s child spacing programme.
 
It covers budgeting and interventions in child spacing public health and well being through family planning.
 
Contraceptive prevalence rate in Bauchi is 2.1%, but that's expected to grown by 23.54% by next year.
 

Federal government raises alarm over Nigeria’s population growth

Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, over the weekend raised a fresh alarm over Nigeria’s rate of population growth.
 
According to him, if the rate was unchecked, the explosion in the nation’s population would impact negatively on the country’s economy and welfare.
 
To this end, Adewole called for the use of Community Health Extension Workers (CHEWS) to address the problems of shortage and misdistribution of manpower needed for the provision of access to family planning services in rural communities and other hard to reach areas.

4m Pregnancies In Nigeria Caused By Poor Access To Family Planning – UNFPA

The State of World Population (SWOP) Report, 2017, launched by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), has placed Nigeria among countries with high rate of unintended pregnancies, with about 4million cases annually.
 
The report has blamed the situation on limited access to family planning which, it says, does not only harm women’s health, but also restrict their ability to move towards financial independence.
 

UNFPA Calls For Increased Women, Girls Protection

The UN Population Fund (UNFPA) has presented the 2017 State of the World Population Report (SWOP) with a call for the Nigerian government to provide more protection to women and adolescent girls.
 
Dr Eugene Kongnyuy, the Deputy Country Representative, UNFPA Nigeria, made the call while presenting the report on Thursday in Abuja.

More Lagosians embrace Family Planning, says NURHI 2

The Nigerian Urban Reproductive Health Initiative (NURHI 2) said it has reached an additional 245,318 Lagosians with the message of Child Birth Spacing(CBS) in 10 local government areas between November 2016 and October 2017.

 

 

Speaking at an event organized for about 200 Community Mobilizers in Ajeromi Ifelodun Local Government yesterday, Senior Programme Officer for NURHI 2, Mr. Adewale Haastrup said from the records derived from the ommunity Mobilizers, more Lagosians are receptive to CBS programmes.

 

 

Oyo Assembly proposes bill on family planning

A Bill for a Law to provide for the Regulation of Family Planning, Reproductive Health and Safe Maternity Services on Tuesday scaled the first reading at the Oyo State House of Assembly.
 
The  Chairman, House Committee on Health, Mr Silas Okunlola, read the bill which was co-sponsored by eight lawmakers.
 
The lawmakers were; Mr Silas Okunlola ( Iwajowa), Mr Segun Ajanaku ( Ibadan South West 2 ), Mr Abiden Wahab (Oluyole) and Mr Bolanle Agbaje (Ibadan North 1).
 

‘Stop Contraceptive Stock-Out To End Unplanned Pregnancies’

Worried by stock-out of contraceptive commodities and consumables, experts at the Performance Monitoring and Accountability (PMA) 2020, a recent family planning (FP) review, advocated increased funding for FP by state governments.
 
In view of high incidence of unplanned pregnancies, Funmi Olaolorun, the Co-Principal Investigator, PMA 2020, stressed that increased funding by state governments would  tackle  stock-out of contraceptive commodities and consumables in many states.
 

NOA Task Religious Leaders On Essential Family Practices

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has urged religious leaders to help reduce maternal and infant mortality by disseminating right information on Family Planning (FP).

The Director of NOA in Nasarawa State, Mrs Priscilla Aluor, made the call at a two-day workshop on updated essential family practices held in Karu Local Government Area of the state on Thursday.

The meeting was attended by 42 participants from seven local government areas of the state.
