Midwives key to rural women’s health – Mrs Saraki

Mrs Toyin Saraki, Founder and President of the Wellbeing Foundation Africa (WBFA) has advocated for training and equipping of midwives as they hold the key to health of rural women in Nigeria.

Speaking at the wrap up of a two weeks advocacy and sensitisation on the roles of midwives in Nigeria, Mrs Saraki said that women encounter midwives more than doctors.

She said that in the rural areas, a well trained and equipped midwife would educate the rural woman on many health issues that concern them.

Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has called on Nurses and Midwives in the country to rededicate themselves to quality service delivery in order to boost healthcare and reduce the high prevalence of infant and maternal mortality in the country.

Nigeria ranked 7th among countries facing shortage of health workers

Nigeria is ranked 7th among 57 countries classified as facing a critical shortage of health workers, it was learnt Tuesday
.
According to the Minister of Health, Prof Isaac Adewole the country has a shortage of 144,000 health workers. Nigeria is ranked second in Africa behind Ethiopia with 152,000.

Presently, the country boasts of 240,000 nurses and midwives and by 2030 the country will be needing 149,852 doctors and 471,353 nurses and midwives.

The President of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Abdulrafiu Adeniji has decried the poor state of health facilities in the country, arguing it has made midwives not to perform optimally on their jobs.

He therefore called for a stronger health system and well-equipped facilities that make healthcare accessible, especially those in rural communities.

As Nigeria joins the rest of the World in Marking the International Day of The Mid Wife, Mrs Toyin Saraki, Wife of the President of the Nigerian Senate has hailed the role of midwives around the world in saving lives of mothers and babies.

At an event held in Abuja on Friday to mark the International Day, Mrs Saraki, Founder of the Wellbeing Foundation Africa, said that she was only able to survive child birth because of the role of midwives.

Health Development Agency Deploys 1,447 Midwives To Rural Communities

The National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), has deployed 1,447 midwives to rural communities in the northern part of Nigeria for their one year mandatory Midwives Service Scheme (MSS).

At a Flag-Off Orientation and Documentation of Basic Midwives held in Kaduna on Thursday, the Acting Executive Director of the agency, Dr. Echezona Ezeanolue, who declared the induction course open, said the programme was aimed at reversing the ugly trend in the maternal and child health outcomes.

As part of efforts to improving maternal, newborn and child health outcomes and consolidating on the gains of the Midwives Service Scheme (MSS), the Federal Government through the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) is deploying 1,473 newly graduated basic midwives to Primary Health Care (PHC) facilities in rural areas throughout the 36 States and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja.

The Federal Government, through the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) is deploying 1,473 newly graduated basic midwives to Primary Health Care facilities in rural areas throughout the 36 States and FCT.

The deployment is aimed at improving maternal, newborn and child health outcomes and consolidating on the gains of the Midwives Service Scheme (MSS) of the Federal Government.

The deployment was announced through a press statement signed by Saadu Salahu Head, Public Relations Unit.
